Jump ropes are generally a very personal piece of equipment and should be judged on a person by person basis e.g. how high they jump, how long your arms are etc.
However, a general rule when beginning is just to size it using your height.

6'0 and above - 300cm length skipping rope

Look at Mayweather, by all accounts his hands became brittle over the years but he managed to keep them strong and safe by developing his hand strength. He wouldn't have lasted as long if he didn't, that's for sure.
There are a number of ways you can develop your hand muscles to condition them for a fight:
1) Finger Grips - excellent for keeping your fingers conditioned and strong. Adds a level of resistance to extending your fingers.
- Green - 3kg / 6.6lbs
- Grey - 4kg / 8.8lbs
- Black - 5kg / 11lbs
2) Hand Grips - they provide a similar stretch to the finger grips but the additional material makes it a little easier to do and has a slightly different angle for the stretch.
- Green - 3kg / 6.6lbs
- Blue - 4kg / 8.8lbs
- Orange - 5kg / 11lbs
3) Ring Grips - This is more tailored for developing your hand strength rather than finger strength (although you can actually do both here). Squeeze on your ring and develop your hands!
